NORTH BERGEN North Bergen public schools has booted 34 students from the district because they have been found not to be residents of the township, officials said.



The ineligible students were discovered during an endoftheschool year review of student residency, officials said.



The majority of the ineligible students were from nearby communities, including West New York, Union City and Jersey City, said John Belluardo, the district supervisor of attendance and registration.

Of the 34 ineligible students, eight were at the high school and 12 were at Lincoln School, which offers preschool programs, Belluardo said.

The North Bergen school district has 7,500 students in six elementary schools and a high school.



A typical student costs the district roughly $12,000 for the school year. That figure rises to roughly $20,000 a year for students with special needs.



The district has no plans to try to recoup money from the parents of the ineligible students, officials said.



Belluardo said the district encourages students and parents to report ineligible students, offering a $100 reward to individuals who turn ineligible students in.
